Artist's Palette

Nature's Natural Palette

One of the most unique areas of Death Valley National Park is Artist's Palette, specifically, a portion of the nine-mile drive known as "Artist's Drive." Famous for its beautiful, vibrant colors that the outer facing rocks showcase, this phenomenon is caused by the oxidation of different metals found within the rock formations and is due to the chemical weathering and hydrothermal alteration occurrences within the area. Each metal, when oxidized, produces a different color. Iron compounds produce pink, red and yellow colors whereas mica and manganese produce green and purple respectively. These colors are likely a remnant of explosive volcanic times of the past! Don't forget to bring your camera to capture this jaw-dropping scenery.

Discover Alaska's wildlife

Encountering the incredible wildlife of Alaska as you cruise the Inside Passage

You are one with nature as you cruise Alaska’s Inside Passage… through a larger-than-life wilderness capped by snow-crowned mountains, glacier-carved fjords, and lush green forests... encountering the most remarkable array of wildlife anywhere in the US – including humpback whales, bald eagles, orcas, seals, puffins, salmon, porpoises, sea lions… beaver, moose, grizzly bears, caribou, bison… elk, musk oxen, coyotes and more…

A step back in time... Cesky Krumlov!

Explore medieval Cesky Krumlov

Cesky Krumlov grew up around 13th-century Krumlov Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in the Czech Republic. In addition to the castle’s storied mix of architectural styles, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque among them, the Winter Riding School, lavishly built in Viennese Rococo style, is one of the highlights of any visit...

Back to the romance of 20th-century rail travel

Evoking the Golden Age of European train travel

Your rail journey aboard Golden Eagle Danube Express transports you not only through Central Europe, but also back to the “golden age” of European rail travel of the early 20th century, when traveling by train was the most romantic way to explore the Continent. It all starts in your well-appointed cabin, where coordinated fabrics, wood-paneled walls and brass fittings evoke the glamour of the “age of steam.” When you leave your cabin, the elegance of a bygone era continues in the Bar Lounge Car – the social heart of the Danube Express and a great place to relax and meet with friends – and on the train’s vintage-style restaurant cars, featuring fine food, great wines and attentive service.

Life on the Waterways

Dutch culture along The Netherlands' inland waterways

Much of The Netherlands was under water during medieval times; more than half the country has been reclaimed from the sea since then, and is maintained by a drainage system of windmills, dykes, dams and canals. Amsterdam, founded as a small fishing village on the mouth of the Amstel River, grew to become the trading center of a massive empire in the 17th century, evidence of which is seen today in its gabled mansions and inspired architecture along its canals. And pretty Enkhuizen is laced with canals and vestiges of its maritime roots, proudly recreated in the Zuiderzee Museum, whose historic structures and open-air exhibits showcase life in a Dutch fishing village from the 1880s to the 1930s.

Discover the Medieval harbor of Bonifacio on the island of Corsica

In the 12th century, Boniface II of Tuscany built a fortified town at the tip of Corsica, perched above soaring white cliffs and crashing surf. The town of Bonifacio was meant to guard the Tuscan coast from Saracens and pirates, and its brilliant defensive position defied foreign assaults for centuries. The fjordlike harbor is only accessible to small ships and private yachts – oh, like the one you'll be sailing! Once ashore, you can hop a minitrain for a ride up to the citadel, wander the maze of medieval lanes, marvel at the fort and the breathtaking views, and drink in its turbulent history.
